Which AI Models and Tools Should You Use for Work Now?

A dated, source-based guide to current ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini choices, with practical examples and availability limits.

Choose an AI tool by the job you need to finish, then check the model and access rules for that specific product. A model announcement does not mean it is available in every chat app, API, region or workplace account.

Reviewed October 11, 2026. This is a focused guide to three providers, not a complete record of every AI release. Older course examples may use historical model names. Use the official links below before buying a plan or building an integration.

ChatGPT: distinguish Chat, Work and Codex

OpenAI's October 7 release notes describe GPT-6 Sol for paid Chat users and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, with a rollout starting that week. Intelligent UI can combine text with visuals and interactive elements. The Pro reasoning option uses Astra and does not support Intelligent UI. Work and Codex did not change models with that release.

The September 29 notes describe GPT-6.1 Sol rolling out in Work and Codex, starting with Pro and expanding to other plans. Workspace controls affect access. October 6 added audio uploads for paid subscriptions and workspaces, with availability varying by client, region, settings and model.

Claude: use release news as a starting point

Anthropic's newsroom lists Opus 5.5 on September 22, Sonnet 5.5 on September 28 and Haiku 5.5 on October 7. Those announcements describe different capability and cost tradeoffs. They do not establish that one model is best for your workflow or available through every integration.

The current Claude API catalog also lists Fable 5.1 alongside Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Read the model documentation for exact access and platform support; the newest newsroom item is not the whole catalog.

Start with a routine document task and a difficult task from your own work. Compare factual errors, editing time and total cost. Check the model shown in your product and its provider documentation before relying on a release headline.

Gemini: API and consumer access differ

Google's API model catalog lists Gemini 3.8 Flash as stable and Gemini 3.1 Pro as preview. It recommends 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash for new projects. Access to the older 2.5 API models is limited to users who previously used them; the catalog says they are not deprecated.

Use the catalog to check the exact endpoint, lifecycle status and supported inputs. A preview requires a fallback and extra testing. Consumer Gemini subscriptions have their own access rules, so an API listing does not prove availability in the Gemini app.

Building with an API? Check retirement dates

OpenAI lists October 23, 2026 shutdowns for several older GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 aliases and snapshots. Match the exact model identifier in your integration against the provider's retirement table and test the recommended replacement before switching. Consumer chat names do not establish API lifecycle status.

Three useful experiments

  1. Research: give the tool a narrow decision and ask for a table of claims, source links, dates and unresolved questions. Open the sources yourself. Start with our decision-brief workflow.
  2. Audio: use a recording you have permission to process. Ask for decisions, action items and unclear passages. Check names and numbers against the recording before sharing the notes.
  3. Coding: give Codex or Claude Code a small repository task with acceptance criteria. Inspect the diff, run the relevant tests and try the result as a user. Use the repository change request as a starting brief.

Before you switch or spend

Check current pricing on the provider's own site, including API charges, usage limits and workplace controls. Keep a working fallback. Use approved data, compare results on the same tasks and include verification time in your cost calculation. A newer model is worth adopting when it improves your actual work.
